How the NHL's Vintage Hartford Whalers Logo Came to Be
In 1979, the WHA folded and the New England Whalers were one of only four teams absorbed into the NHL. The franchise was renamed and in need of a new logo. What happened next,… an iconic design that has outlasted the franchise itself.
In an episode of “Whaler Talk: Hosted by The Hartford Whalers Booster Club” back in 2014, Peter Good, designer of the Hartford Whalers logo, and Jack Lardis, the advertising executive hired to lead market entry for the Whalers into the NHL, discuss how the logo came to be and how they led the Hartford Whalers to limelight.
Sidenote, Wave Makers Group (avid fans of hockey and with a deep love of whales, obviously) boasts a Hartford Whalers vintage logo schematic print in our office. We love it and it’s available for purchase and customizable on Etsy!
So what does this all have to do with positioning? The power behind a brand when it’s aligned with its position can create memorable experiences. The Whalers became an endeared team because they drew an emotional attachment from their fans.
We hope you enjoyed going down memory late with us!
