During our years leading in-house corporate marketing and creative teams we’ve worked with many (let us stress, MANY) marketing, advertising, and public relations agencies. We’ve felt the pain first hand of having to sign an extended agreement without knowing how the relationship will go — But you’ll be hard pressed to find an agency willing to provide a “trial month.”
We couldn’t agree more with this one. Good marketing isn’t just a quick email blast or one thought provoking campaign — It’s integrating all aspects of marketing strategically, launching initiatives based on the defined strategies, and waiting for results to take place. That said, within 30 days you should be able to tell how engaged a group is going to be with you. You will also be able to tell within the first few deliverables if the quality of work is what you anticipated, and if you are being provided with access to the team members you expected.
When an agency takes on a new client, they should take time to do a deep dive into your company. This, if done correctly or at all, takes time and internal resources. If you were able to leave after your first month, there is a fear that they have now wasted that investment, therefore ensuring that you are held for a longer duration. That said, most agencies are more concerned with the project and retainer at hand, rather than fully understanding your business from top to bottom, the competitive landscape, and even the internal politics. Without previous in-house experience it is difficult for agencies to truly become a partner to your business, and therefore this vital onboarding period is largely pushed to the size for quick wins, if not dismissed completely.
Agencies want to keep you. To do this, they often want to protect research and assets that they create. Since, if you moved on, you would be able to provide this work to another agency, or use it in-house, they will often make it difficult for you to “own.” Beware of this situation and ensure that all of your assets, including website and website hosting, are included and available to you at any time.
Here’s the truth: Agencies will always provide the best service and time to their top paying clients. This means that although you may have been pitched to and signed with a certain team or strategist, that team or person may not be on your account. Generally, an agency will pitch to a prospective client with their top and most expensive talent. This person is used primarily for strategy and pitching. (PS — We won’t ever do that.
